The Constant Eye, Vol.1 – Now Available

Yes, the great day has come. A smiling UPS man arrived this morning and dropped off the first copy of The Constant Eye, Vol.1 hot off the press from Blurb.
After all the waiting I have to say I’m pleased with it! If you want to get your hands on one right away go straight to the Blurb site and sign up. I have to say they don’t seem to have updated their exchange rates recently…
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the book, and don’t forget to comment on the pictures on the book’s website.

Paul, congrats on your book. Very nice work. I discovered your photography after you “favorited” one of my images on Flickr. I enjoyed reading the introduction to your book. I respect and admire your choice of technique. While I use a digital SLR and have plenty of zoom lenses, I have recently simplified my method to using a fixed 28mm. In your intro, you mentioned that you are not trying to make good individual pictures, but trying to make a good body of work. This statement made me stop and think for a bit. I agree in part, but not fully. I still want pictures to stand on their own; to be good of their own merit. I feel that a good body of work is made up of many good individual pictures. A series of mediocre pictures is a mediocre body of work. I am not saying you take mediocre pictures. Far from it. I enjoy your images. You have created a good body of work and many very good individual photos. Keep up the good work, I look forward to checking your site in the future.

Quite right Tim – I don’t see a good body of work as being a separate thing from producing good individual pictures. On the contrary.
Good pictures stand on their own, but the other pictures you take put them in context. With my work, by keeping the technique constant, I am allowing that context to become more influential.
I’m very glad you enjoyed the pictures.
Cheers, Paul.
