The Street Photography Experience
I doubt there’s any photographic subject that generates as much hot air as street photography. Any definition is next to pointless since everyone who cares knows it when they see it – even if everyone sees a different thing. Seems there’s a wide spectrum. It’s a bit like jazz: on the one end Bix Beiderbecke on the other, perhaps, Ken Vandermark.
My practice of street photography involves a lot of walking and looking, and quite a lot of patience. Since I shoot film I can’t be sure what I’ve got until the wet negatives come out of the dev tank, when the long process of analysis known as ‘editing’ starts. This is when you really find out, for yourself, what your own definition of street photography is. If indeed you ever find out – I’m still not sure myself. And that’s the way it should be.
I run courses in London for individuals and groups. The courses are enjoyable, informative and very rewarding. Click on the banner below to learn more.
